Modern Casselberry was once part of the unincorporated, adjacent Fern Park. The few settlers lived a rural life among the ferns until 1926 when Hibbard Casselberry of Winnetka, Illinois visited his wife’s aunt in nearby Winter Park. Casselberry met Gordon J. Barnett, who had plans for developing housing and ferneries in an area west of Lake Concord which he had named Fern Park Estates, and he became his exclusive sales agent. Barnett moved on to politics, and Casselberry went on to develop his own subdivisions and ferneries, and even a hotel and race track. A post office was established as Fern Park in 1928. The town was eventually incorporated as Casselberry in 1940, leaving the area to the south as Fern Park. The ferneries, declared non-essential, were turned into manufacturing facilities during World War II, rendering many of the buildings unusable for many years after the war. US EPA Brownfields Cleanup Grants have enabled such sites to be made available for industrial development again more recently.
